The most common commercial roofing materials today are EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), asphalt rolls, TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), acrylic coatings, and SPF (spray polyurethane foam). Metal roofs are gaining in popularity over other roofing options because of their many benefits. These include:
1. Fire Retardant
Although metal is the perfect heat and electricity conductor, this property doesn’t make them fire starters. Metal roofs, in contrast, are great fire retardants because of their high boiling point. Metal can be even more fire retardant with a special fire-retarding coating that prevents lightning strikes from igniting a fire. We install and maintain Class A metal roofs which are the most fire retardant roofs.
Fire retardant property is particularly important in commercial buildings like hotels where there is always a risk of a fire breaking out.
2. Insulation and UV Protection
Although metals are good conductors of heat, a specialty coating can be applied to act as a coolant. The coating can reflect UV rays and solar radiant heat. The coating also ensures that there are no seams on the metal panels which leads to optimum insulation.
Efficient insulation means cost savings in heating and cooling costs. The heat conducting property of metal is their greatest disadvantage, which is why we only install metal roofs that have this specialty coating.
3. Environmental Friendliness
Metal is 100% recyclable. Although manufacturers reinforce roofing products with self-made formulas, most metal roofs are around 95% recyclable. This makes metal the perfect choice if you want to green roofing. It costs billions each year to dispose of the materials used in other types of roofing materials.
4. Longevity
One of the greatest benefits of metal roofing over other types of roofing is their longevity. Metal roofs last between 40 and 70 years, depending on the roofing material. In comparison, asphalt lasts for between 10 and 20 years. Metal roofs can withstand high winds (some up to 140MPH), moisture, and sunshine and they require little upkeep. The metal we use in roofing is also impact resistant, does not crack, and has been treated to be corrosion resistant.
5. Different Choices to Choose From
There are many types of metal that are well suited for roofing and all have different characteristics, meaning there is something for everyone. You can choose between copper, aluminum, tin, galvanized steel, and other options. You can also customize your roof based on the characteristic that you want.
6. Aesthetically Pleasing
Metal roofing can be made to mimic traditional roofing materials like shingle and slate if you are going for aesthetics. You can also use different color coatings for branding and aesthetic purposes. Copper gives you a beautiful green patina as it ages and is one of our clients’ favorite.
